Welcome to Ground Up Organics!Eating meat you raised with TLC and food you have grown means eating foods infused with integrity, sweat, loyalty, determination, love, friendship, memories, loss, perseverance and respect. None of these things are ingredients you will find on the labels of food in any grocery store, no matter how hard you look. This is how we chose to feed our family, friends and customers. No, we are not UDSDA Organic certified, the process is unnecessarily burdensome and expensive, but our philosophy is quite simple: We never use harmful chemicals in the garden, pasture, orchard or poultry yard. Sustainable agricultural and humane animal husbandry practices are the only ethical way to produce food. As a matter of fact, we meet the guidelines set by the global animal partnership for humane treatment. The only issue which prevents us from being rated 5+ is the banding of baby rams. Our poultry certainly meets the 5+ rating standard. We are located a few miles north of Ladonia, Texas, about 2 hours away from downtown Dallas. Sustainable agriculture is a challenge in this part of Texas, supplies are difficult to impossible to purchase locally, and what little may be found is almost double the cost than what is found in more organic friendly areas. It can take a long time to change hearts and minds when Monsanto is such a huge presence, funding AG education in cash strapped schools, and supporting the AG youth groups such as 4H and FFA. But, change is coming. There are more and more small organic farms blooming in the under served counties, more organic food may be sourced at the local farmer's markets and CSA's are springing up. There are raw milk sources and some organic choices in the local markets - although the quality is often poor. Since 2013, Ground Up Organics has been a work in progress, restoring soil health and balance, turning worn pasture into a thriving organic ecosystem, providing habitat for beneficial wildlife and building sustainable permaculture systems along with row crops, bees and pastured livestock. After several years, the hard work is beginning to pay off. Ground Up Organics will continue to grow and products will be added regularly. The Environmental Watch Group has released their updated 2018 list of the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15. This guide is very helpful when shopping on a tight budget, letting you know which fruits and vegetables are best to buy organic and which, once well soaked and washed in a vinegar rinse, are safe to buy non organic. In the spring, we will have a limited amount of lamb ready for your favorite recipe. Pastured, non-medicated, given only Molly's organic herbal tonic and wormer, fed winter supplements of organic alfalfa, unsprayed hay, mixed pellets, and, when the weather is extremely cold, a warm mash made with organic oats, alfalfa, molasses and sunflower seeds. Clean, meaty, mild, yet so rich in flavor, this lamb is completely different from the lamb you have seen in most grocery stores. In the fall, just in time for your holiday table, Red Bourbon turkey toms! Pastured, our turkeys enjoy a full life, basking in the sun, dust bathing, eating grasses, seeds and bugs, no chemicals, no soy, no wheat, no confinement pens, just happy healthy birds.
